Supporting the conservation of the Nuraghi sites in Sardinia

The value appreciation of cultural heritage helps preserve the memory of the national community and its territory and promotes cultural development. It is therefore essential to deal with the protection of cultural heritage, which lies in its recognition, conservation, preservation, and restoration.

The Nuraghe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are ancient stone constructions of truncated cone shape found, with varying concentrations, all over Sardinia, Italy. On average, they are scattered over the entire island, one every 3 km², strongly characterizing the landscape.

The monitoring of their condition and attention to risk situations that could be connected to the cultural asset is therefore fundamental prerequisites for preserving their integrity.

The CRS4, a company wholly owned by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, launched a territorial monitoring activity to support the conservation of Sardinia’s ancient megalithic buildings. The activity is included in the NuraghEO project as part of the OCRE program for developing services linked to the Copernicus platform.

The NuraghEO objective is to exploit the potential of Earth Observation in providing multidimensional/multi-temporal analysis of the territory to develop cloud-based services supporting:

  • Displacement monitoring,
  • Environmental condition assessment,
  • Archaeological exploration.

Earth Observation data are an effective tool to support the efficient management and conservation of the Nuraghi. In particular, CRS4 will have at its disposal the Rheticus Displacement platform, with which it will be able to verify the integrity of the Nuraghi through constant monitoring and a wide range of crucial information, such as dynamic maps, millimetrically accurate reports, and timely notifications.

The use of the Rheticus Displacement service will provide CRS4 with a range of information such as displacement trends caused by natural and induced subsidence, temporal changes in vegetation conditions, and data on soil use, cover, temperature, and humidity that will have multiple benefits:

  • ensure the preservation of cultural heritage;
  • assess the environmental conditions of the surrounding natural area and support archaeological prospecting activities;
  • build a database of digital historical information to identify potential locations of new archaeological sites.
