Sabesp (Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo) is the largest water and waste management company in Latin América, based in Brazil. It provides water and sewage services to 60% of the population of the state of São Paulo. 

Managing an area of almost 1000 square Km, the Sabesp maintenance team needs a toll which give them a big picture of the entire area, an alert system which prioritize the areas where damage may occur and an intuitive service that allows to observe these cases easily. 

Thanks to the cooperation between Hexagon Brasil, and TecTerra Geotecnologias, a geo-technology service provider, starting from January 2022, Sabesp started using Rheticus. The utility’s need is to analyze the stability conditions, as well as land movements, in order to detect structural inclinations, settlement trends, elastic movements, among other phenomena related to surface soil movements and/ or structures. 

Their goal is to ensure the continuous operation of 25 pumping substations located in a wide area. The use of traditional techniques, such as total stations, GNSS network, etc., for periodic monitoring of areas required considerable time and economic resources. In addition, these activities cannot cover large or medium area, and put considerable limits for remote areas, leading to a lack of information and without ensuring the environmental protection and the safeguarding of assets. 

By using the Rheticus service, it possible to overcome these limits, achieving actionable, high-frequency, accurate information thanks to the increasing availability of open data. Further the satellite technology offers low-cost monitoring on wide and remote areas, granting detailed information on the entire area of interest. By doing this, Sabesp can timely track any ground motion phenomena, check infrastructure integrity and ensure steady ground monitoring in areas affected by subsidence and landslides.  

Dynamic maps, painstakingly accurate reports on their area of interest, alerts, allow Sabesp to monitor critical infrastructures at all stages of their life cycle, from design to production, management and maintenance.
